Sustaining Engineer# 08008

The Sustaining Engineer is a key member of the engineering team as first responder in the support of released product.
Under limited supervision, the Sustaining Engineer shall be responsible for the design maintenance of products that have been Alpha released to Manufacturing. This includes support for production problems, field problems, quality problems, material obsolescence, corrective and preventive actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
  • Perform job function in a safe manner and in conjunction with established company safety guidelines and policies.
  • Perform job function in accordance with our Quality Management System (QMS) policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate with Manufacturing Engineering and Quality to monitor production processes / metrics, to identify and prioritize problems that develop in the course of production.
  • Respond in a timely manner to provide assistance in determining design-related causes and assist with design changes as required through collaboration with the design / project engineer.
  • Make and recommend design changes through test and troubleshooting of digital, analog, RF, Video, and Audio communication circuitry, by applying principles and theories of electromechanical design, electronic circuitry and component engineering.
  • Responsible for the creation / coordination of documentation for design changes and all associated ECO activity. Write Temporary Deviation (TD’s) to document and allow temporary changes to process or product as required.
  • Coordinate all design changes and verification with the project and systems engineer.
  • Evaluate and qualify component changes based on availability and or cost reduction and/or performance improvement - inclusive of PCB layout changes, qualification, and complete documentation.
  • Provide continuous improvement to new and existing designs as identified through analysis of data (repair, customer returns, CA/PA, production yields, etc), for performance, reliability, manufacturability and cost reduction.
  • Address Corrective and Preventive Actions (CA/PA) as assigned, through root cause analysis, short and long term actions and verification.
  • Provide support to Product Management with current and future customer issues and requirements.
  • Maintain, update, redesign, document, and fabricate production test fixtures / procedures in the support of released product.
  • Operate general machine tools and test equipment to fabricate prototype models and custom test equipment where applicable.
  • Write thorough technical reports and develop charts, graphs, and schematics to describe and illustrate complex system operating characteristics, conditions, deviations from design specifications, and functional limitations for consideration by engineers in broader determinations affecting system design and laboratory procedures.
  • Interact with QA, production, industrial / manufacturing engineering, materials, customer service, product management, and design engineering.
  • Operate under limited supervision providing technical assistance to production assembly, test, industrial / manufacturing engineering, and QA.
  • Independent judgment is required to accomplish these work objectives. Work is subject to review through conferences, reports, and observation of results obtained.

    Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree (BSET) or equivalent from a four-year College or technical school in a technical discipline; or ten plus years directly related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to work with basic math, algebra and trigonometry as it appears in the field of electronics.

    Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    Computer Skills
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient with the following software packages or equivalent manufactures of similar software functions; schematic capture (OrCad), Drawing (Auto Cad), Manufacturing ERP (Syteline), Project Management (MS Project), Spreadsheet, Word Processing, Power Point (MS Office), Internet Browser (MS Explorer), Photo Editing (Adobe Elements).

    Other Skills and Abilities
    Knowledge of:
  • ISO 9001-2000 Quality Standards
  • The methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction, test, repair and operation of electronic equipment
  • Electronic theory and terminology
  • Standard electronic design evaluation and modification procedures
    Skill in:
  • Circuit design including RF analog and digital disciplines
  • Electronic troubleshooting and repair techniques
  • De-bugging systems and sub-assemblies to component level
  • Surface mount technologies
  • Design and construction of RF analog and/or digital test fixtures
  • Root cause analysis and solving problems
    Other abilities:
  • Strong initiative and “Can do attitude” – ability to get things done
  • Ability to work various schedules to meet project commitments
  • Be able to work in dynamic / multi-project environment with highly visible results
  • Able to document results of work/process

    Other Qualifications:
  • US Citizenship required; employees must be able to work in an environment with information/products covered in DTC’s Technology Control Plan (TCP).
